-joseph pilates
Developed in the 1920s by the legendary physical trainer Joseph H. Pilates, The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving total body flexibility and strength, leaving you looking toned, feeling revitalized and moving with ease.
What is the Pilates Core?
Pilates uses CORE STABILIZATION to promote coordination and centering, establish efficient movement patterns, and for injury prevention. Pilates exercises help develop balanced strength and flexibility in the muscles, increased range of motion in the joints and a renewed sense of mobility by focusing on the deep postural muscles for stability.
What Pilates called the "powerhouse" refers to the important core muscles of the trunk, the abdominals and back extensors. In particular, the deepest muscle of the abdominals, the transverses abdominals, which wraps around the body like a cumber bund, and the multifidus muscles, of the deep posterior spinal group, are vital for core stability. The more superficial muscles, such as the rectus abdominus and obliques in the front, and the transverso-spinalis and erector spinae groups of the back, work to stabilize and control movements of the spine as a whole.
Pilates also emphasizes utilizing the muscles of the hips and shoulders for both stabilizing and promoting efficient movement of the limbs. By working all of the muscle groups that support these "global" joints equally, it is possible to restore balance, increase strength and promote optimal range of motion in the joints.
Small Group Reformer
In this small group class you will be guided through a series of controlled exercises that are specifically tailored to your level of ability. Each student will work on a reformer, a special apparatus that allows for full range of motion with increasing levels of difficulty. This amazing program will help you to attain a higher level of balance in your exercise program as you simultaneously strengthen and stretch your entire body.
Mat Pilates
The Mat Pilates class focuses on strength, precision, and flow of movement. Intructors present the exercises at beginning, intermediate, or advanced paces. Students will learn to be aware of breathing patterns and spinal alignment while engaging the deep muscles of the core.
BARREMIXED presents a series of exercises that strengthen and lengthen arms and legs, stabilize your core, elongate the spine, and enhance balance. The workout is completed at a ballet barre and on the Pilates mat, utilizing your own body weight and props for resistance, and accompanied by the best playlists to keep you motivated.
Dynamic Core
This is Kiki's signature class. Low impact cardio movement incorporating functional training, yoga and pilates moves. We blend all the moves to elevate the heart rate, work efficiently and it's all done in your bare feet to strengthen all the muscles, all done to upbeat motivating music! Jump Board Interval
If you are looking to add a Pilates inspired cardiovascular workout to your regimen, this class is for you! The jump board is a standard piece of Pilates equipment used on the Reformers to provide a fun, challenging alternative to rev up your cardiovascular system.

As soon as Kristen played the first song of her custom remix playlist, I knew I was going to love BarRemixed! It's toned my muscles, given me more control of my extensions and turns and, generally, kicked my butt! The format of switching from bar to floor work to bar again kept me interested the ENTIRE class and allowed me to push through the exercises!

As a professional figure skater with Disney On Ice, it's important that I not only keep my body in shape and flexible, but also learn the techniques necessary to maintain those qualities. Kiki at Kiki Pilates (along with Kristen Reynolds), helped me accomplish both! Now when I'm touring Europe this fall, I'll be able to keep up with the amazing forms they've shown me; regardless if have access to a gym or only a hotel room!
My first introduction to Pilates was during my ballet dancing years in Amsterdam. All ballet dancers did Pilates especially male dancers - and the instructor to go to was an American girl who was an avid followed of Joseph Pilates and kept it real classical. After I left Amsterdam I tried several Pilates classes at several locations, but never found one that left me feeling exhilarated like the real classic ones back in the day in Amsterdam. This past summer my husband and I moved to Beverly and we soon became BAC members. I saw the Kiki Pilates studio, but having been disappointed so often in the past by so-called Pilates experts, I didnt keep my hopes up too high. Then the Saturday came that I had my first mat class from Kiki and I felt like I had come home. This is serious, hard core, classical Pilates the way Joe envisioned it and it is done by someone who understand the practice as well as her clients bodies. I have since then moved on from mat to reformed and absolutely love it. The better you get at Pilates, the more difficult it gets and the only way you can keep pushing your own boundaries and perfecting your moves, is with the help of an instructor that sees your potential, that understands and knows your body and that motivates you to push just a bit further every time you show up and do the work. Kiki is that kind of instructor I think it is safe to say Kiki, you would make Joe proud! Thanks for making me hooked on Pilates again!

I have been a client of Kiki Pilates since January 2010. I was a bit skeptical when I first joined thinking I would never find my core. I didnt even know I had one! I can now proudly say I do and I finally know how to find it and make it work for me in my daily life and other exercise routines. Since Ive joined my posture has dramatically improved, my back is stronger, and I walk taller. My muscles have elongated and I have become more flexible. I feel healthy, strong, and proud of myself. I have a new sense of self-confidence and overall well being. The breathing techniques Ive learned through pilates has helped me with stress reduction. I am a health care provider and have recommended pilates to many patients after seeing the benefits it can provide firsthand. The staff at Kiki Pilates is wonderful. They are experienced, intuitive, friendly, approachable, and cater each workout to each persons individual needs. I look forward to my sessions each week. My only regret with pilates is that I didnt start it sooner.

Thanks to Kiki Pilates I can finally wear leggings and 3" high-heeled ankle boots looking hot and not falling on my face because of the balance, muscle control, and toning I've gained.

Q: Why should I consider taking Pilates?
A: Pilates can help each and every person move with greater efficiency, strength and general ease. Since the spine is the powerhouse of our bodies, all of the core muscles that surround the torso/spine area are integral to our movement abilities. When one has strength, balance and flexibility in the core muscles, The movement patterns of legs and arms are more efficient and the body has greater musculoskeletal integrity.
Q: What is the difference between the mat and equipment-based Pilates?
A: Mat Pilates is mobile and cost-effective, but it is very difficult for many people to execute properly without incumbent strength and flexibility. The Pilates equipment -- the Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair and Ladder Barrel -- support the beginning practioner as they gain strength and body awareness. Through ingenious engineering and spring-loaded resistance, equipment can improve diverse postural and biomechanical issues that the mat cannot address. Equipment work also tends to provide faster results and goal achievement.
Q: Why is BREATHING so important in Pilates?
A: In Pilates, we initiate our movement with an inhale through the nose and an exhale through pursed lips. We direct the breath into the lower ribcage (termed as post lateral breathing). When we empty the air through exhalation, we engage the pelvic floor muscles and deep abdominal muscles which support the lumbar spine (lower back) like a girdle. Deep breathing also facilitates relaxation and concentration.
Q: Why is FORM so critical in Pilates?
A: Proper form in movement guarantees that our physical work will be executed properly. In Pilates, all movement involves the core muscles in some way (either through stabilization or mobilization). If we are aligned properly and use correct form, we know that our muscles and connecting tissues are being used optimally. We can expect to develop greater strength, muscular balance and flexibility when we are positioned correctly. Form is our insurance that our movement outcomes will be successful.
